I recently learned about the concept, Ikigai. According to the Japanese, it is our “reason for being”. Discovering your ikigai requires a deep and often lengthy search within yourself. It is believed that discovery of one’s ikigai is an important endeavor, as it brings satisfaction and meaning to life.

In 2009, when my husband died of cancer, I was driven to find my ikigai. I wanted to transcend my suffering by finding meaning within it and to use my own healing to help others. I began by drawing on my business experience helping organizations define their long term vision and strategy. I adapted this process by incorporating the wisdom and spiritual practices I was using to transform my life.

I discovered a process to help find the ʻG Spotʼ of our lives – the place where the four principles of happiness converge: Meaning, Prosperity, Freedom and Authenticity.

Each of these principles have two corresponding characteristics. All eight characteristics (Purpose, Passion, Experience, Talents, Story, Tribe, Style and Values) must be balanced for the individual to reach his or her highest potential. Together, the four principles and eight characteristics form one’s unique Flower of Light™, with the ikigai or Zen Spot™ in the centre.

1. The first principle, Meaning, is experienced by living our purpose and passion. When meaning is missing from our lives or work, we can become emotionally and spiritually bankrupt.

2. The second principle, Prosperity, is achieved by sharing our unique talents and experience with the world. Understanding and leveraging our expertise, gifts and assets help us to attract abundance.

3. Freedom, the third principle, hinges on connecting with our tribe and expressing our personal journey (Story). Each one of us have a defining moment in our lives. Expressing it can help inspire and guide others. Similarly, surrounding ourselves with like-minded individuals allows us to express ourselves freeing.

4. The principle of Authenticity, is grounded in the expression of two key characteristics – our values and natural style. When we disregard our values to please another, we feel inauthentic. And, when we try to adopt a style that doesn’t fit naturally, we have to work harder to prove ourselves and to succeed.

If you would like help defining your Zen Spot™ – the place where your passions meet your purpose; your gifts combine with your experience and unique story; and where your values align with your natural style to best serve your ideal tribe – I offer one-on-one coaching and small group sessions, both live and via Skype.
