Recently at our writing workshop, the Writer’s Kitchen with Julie Gedeon, we discussed walking as part of the creative process. Julia Cameron, author of the Artist Way, recommends going for a walk to help declutter and gain inspiration for our creative project.
I walk most days. It helps me gain clarity, but what I didn’t realize is ‘how’ I walk is an important part of the process.
This morning my head was spinning as I tried to sort out the To Do’s on my existing projects and new ideas for future initiatives. I went into the woods, but instead of a brisk walk, which I learned is good for getting things moving when your energy is sluggish, I slowed down my pace and took the opposite route around to get a fresh perspective. I walked very slowly with intention. Before long I was able to detangle the different initiatives, ideas and priorities that were rambling around in my brain.
This helped me gain a clearer picture of the path forward. So when we say ‘we don’t have enough time to walk’, perhaps if we use walking as a tool in our creative process, it can actually give us more time. Greater clarity and inspiration leads to higher levels of performance, innovation, productivity and even peace and calm. And, isn’t that what we all want after all?
