message from mossPatience, persistence and stick-with-it-ness are the keys to long term success in life and work.

Today’s message from the woods came from Moss. It was a message of Patience, Persistence and Transmutation.

As I looked at the moss growing on the trees and the logs in the forest, I saw new life emerging, not quickly and aggressively, but slowly and patiently. Moss is green, it’s lush, it’s soft, it’s gentle. It has a feminine quality to it. It reminds me to bring those qualities into my work and life. I can be very impatient, especially with my work. I have a tendency to develop programs and projects and get really excited around the creative process. Then, once it’s all done and put into place, I want to move on to the next interesting project. I often leave fields of opportunities unharvested. I think Moss is telling me that I need to be patient to realize the fruits of my labor. I need stamina and consistency to help the work that I have already invested in flourish. Persistence, perseverance, stick-with-it-ness – these are all very important lessons for our lives and work from Moss.

Moss also offers a message of transmutation. Moss uses all the materials, nutrients and ingredients of the dead trees, leaves and organic matter of the forest to grow and nourish itself. This reminded me of a conversation I had yesterday with a caller on a webinar I was conducting. Often, when we decide to move in a new direction in our life and particularly in our work, we abandon the education, training and experience we have gathered to date, not realizing that this background is the foundation for our future prosperity. It is the base from which we can draw wisdom, confidence and credibility. I did this in my own life. For a while, I turned my back on my business and marketing background in pursuit of a more spiritual path. In so doing, I had abandoned years of experience and education that could be used to serve others on my new path.

This brings me back to the first message about ‘persistence’. I am reminded not to leave the seeds that I have sown (my education, training, etc.) to die in the fields, but rather find new ways to transform them into tools to help my life bloom in a new direction. Like the moss, we can take elements of our past experiences that no longer serve us and transmute them into ingredients from which to flourish.
